What is Python

  • Python is a programming tool.

What is Python

  • Python is a programming language.
  • It is Hybrid – meaning it Compiles and Interpret.
  • It is a scripting and general purpose language.
  • General purpose;
    • You can develop: Games, Desktop App, Web App, Data Science App, Machine Language App, etc.
    • Essentially you can create various types of Apps, as it contains large category of libraries to support this development.
  • It is mostly used for Data app and by extension it is Data Centric.

What are Programming Languages

  • Why we use language?
    • To understand each other.
    • Ex: Person1 speaking to Person2.
      • Person1 knows English.
      • Person2 knows Engligh.
      • Both can understand each other well.
    • Ex2: Person1 knows English, and Person2 Knows French.
      • They cannot understand each other.
      • So for this, we need a Translator otherwise known as Interpreter.
      • They will be in the middle, helping Person1 understand Person2, and vice versa.
      • This is what Python is used for, at least 1 of its function which is Interpreting.
  • Translation
  • Usages

Two types of languages

1. Low-Level languages

  • Machine language
    • Nothing but 0s and 1s.
    • Humans cannot understand this.
  • Assembly language
    • Humans can learn to understand and use this.
    • Still difficult.

2. High-Level languages

  • Compiler --> C, C++.
  • Intepreter --> Javacript, PHP.
  • Hybrid --> Python, Java.

Translator

  • Translator = Compiler.
    • Translate from one language to another language.

Compiler / Interpreter

Platform independent vs not independent

  • Platform Independent: C program that is compiled to a .exe file and runs on windows. The same .exe won’t run on MAC or Linux. The C program needs to be re-compiled for each platform. For mac you need a .DMG file. For linux you need a .pkg file.
  • Platform non-independent: A javascript program can run on any platform irrespective of their OS. They just need a runtime environment. Java uses a browser (any) to be interpreted and run as a source code actually. So anyone can see the source code.
    • The java runtime is called a JVM. Yes the browsers are the Java runtime.
  • A python on the other hand also requires a runtime environment (which differs from platform to platform) but you cannot see its source code because it is compiled to a Python-byte file.
    • The python runtime is called a JVM.

Python Paradigm

  • precision programming
  • Object-oriented programming
  • modular programming
  • functional programming

lets say you are developing a program

Monolothic programming

  • Functions are called inside the modules.
